My name is Marilyn Galan and I am the Administrative Assistant at WAY Academy in Southwest Detroit. I was born in New York but grew up and went to school here in Southwest. I was the first in my family to have graduated from high school and also the first to have earned a college degree. I have worked in several schools as a secretary and I also have experience working, as a paraprofessional, with elementary and high school students. I am a proud resident of Southwest Detroit and I enjoy working with the parents and students of my community.
Michael Schwartz is the Student Engagement and Graduation Coach at WAY Academy SW. He has been involved with schools for 15 years after careers in law and catering. He has taught Social Studies at an alternative high school and then has been working on restorative practices in middle school to make sure that students are able to stay in school.
Michael is drawn to this position because he feels that young people need to think about life after school pretty early on, however, it can be confusing for many students. He is hoping he can use his life skills to help young people to make the choice of what is best for themselves based on where their interests lie.
Outside of the school day Michael enjoys cooking and bicycling.
I have been teaching high school students in Detroit since 1976, which has brought me many rewards. One of which is helping students discover their strengths and unique skills in order to maximize their potential. At Grand Valley State University, I earned my Bachelor of Science Degree. My Master’s of Education and Education Specialist degree in Administration were earned at Wayne State University.
I'm Chris Hutton, the special education paraeducator at WAY Academy Southwest. Originally from Davenport Iowa and currently living in Detroit, I have been working with students since 2013 in roles at after-school programs, summer camps, and as a special education paraeducator at South East Junior High School in Iowa City, IA and Skyline High School in Ann Arbor, MI. I love working with young people and providing them with the personal and educational support they need to be happy and successful students.
